Harlow chemicals required an Instrument Control panel to replace an existing system for the final stage of a process to produce a polymer additive for plastics. The existing system due to a lack of comprehensive drawings had to be investigated and a new up to date set was produced for the panel manufacture.
Max Wright Limited using a Wardrobe style cabinet manufactured a new Instrument Control Panel. The Panel consists of three sections each containing Motor control equipment, instrumentation and Pneumatics, the centre containing an Allen Bradley SLC5/05 PLC. At the present time the PLC controls and monitors the processes within the Instrument Control Panel itself, but with the use of the ethernet port on the CPU the system has the capability of being connected to the site SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition). The Control Panel front contains instrumentation, control pushbuttons and an annunciator to give indication and control of the plant. Eurotherm PID control is used extensively for the main process control. Due to some explosive risks in the process, a number of controls are pneumatic.
The existing panel was removed and replaced by a new Control Panel utilising existing wiring already used by the old system, the connection of the new and old systems together was a complete success. During the commissioning, carried out by on site technicians, a Software Engineer was available for any unforeseen circumstances.
